MUD RUN RESULTS and week 6 plan

As I typed that headline above I thought to myself "HOLY CRAP ITS WEEK 6!!!"  Can you believe we're already into week 6 of our season???!!!  That means 7 weeks until regionals!!!

Mud Run Times here -

Mud Run Boys - FIRST OFF CONGRATULATIONS TO THE BOYS TEAM - MUD RUN LARGE SCHOOL TEAM CHAMPIONS!!!  Led by senior Zak Goddard's 2nd place 18:15 in the 11/12th grade race and Ethan Huey's 2nd place 18:19 in the 9/10th grade race we came home with a nice trophy.  I was very impressed with both Zak and Ethan today - these times rank them as the 7th and 9th fastest boys for GHS in the 12 years of running this course.  Given that the mud/water was extremely high this year, I think they'd have been even faster on a drier day.  Nick Green also had a huge race for us today (placing 5th in the 9/10 grade race), in our 3rd spot, improving his time from Clare by 30 seconds or so on a much much tougher course.  4th man Jack Hervela is back in action and had "the race of the day according to Coach Warren" - not having raced an XC race in a year he was super solid for us today. 5th man Andrew Quaal is coming off a summer of hard work and big mileage and nearly ran faster than Clare (a much faster course).  These top 5 guys really ran well and are only about 60 seconds apart.  If we can get that 1-5th man gap down to 40 seconds we are definitely looking at the possibility of making it to the State Finals this year.  Team Captain Justin Desloover and Derek Giallombardo rounded out our top 7 varsity.

Of special note were newcomers Jon Thorold (8th man in only his first high school XC race) and Jacob Book (a freshman in his first race and 9th man).  Both of these two have a chance at making our varsity by the end of this season with some hard work and determination.

Also of note was our boys 9/10 grade race.  Huey in 2nd, Green in 5th, Quaal in 7th is 3 runners in the top 10 of over 100 runners.  First year runners Thorold and Book were not far behind.  This is a bright sign for the future of this boys team.

Led by senior captain Carlie Martella's 2nd place (20:34) finish the lady harriers pulled out an impressive finish.  Without the service of Brianna Martin (knee) and the Massey twins (knee and ankle) we still showed our depth as several young ladies stepped up to help us out.  Martin and the Massey girls are all varsity runners and to be without 3/7 of your varsity and still place 2nd overall is quite impressive.

Fist off, Martella's time ranks her as the 3rd fastest girl with the 4th fastest time in our school history on this course, only to be outdone by State Champion Sloan Secord's 2007 time and multiple all-state and MSU runner Thereseann Zimmerman (Huprikar).  When you mention Carlie's name amongst this sort of company you kind of step back and say "wow!"  She has the speed and the endurance to be one of the best runners in the north this season.  I am looking forward to seeing where she will be in October/November.  Allison Kowatch was solid in our #2 position, working hard as always and really stepping up big today.  Autumn Zimmer held down 3rd position after pushing through some hip issues earlier in the week.  Freshman Amanda Keysor was impressive in the 9/10 grade race as our 4th varsity runner and Adrienne Edwards was our 5th varsity scorer.  Adrienne has been a solid 4 year runner for us and without her today we'd have slipped to 3rd place.  Freshmen Laina Thompson and Angela Sharkey rounded out our varsity scoring.
